Our orthodontist in Edgware does more than just straighten teeth

When adult teeth erupt they can sometimes do so at an angle and they may also be crooked or unevenly positioned. Having an uneven smile can cause all sorts of insecurities and leave people feeling like they don’t want to smile in public, but it is easy to straighten them. People will often make an appointment with us at Katz & Madhok Orthodontics to find out more about traditional straightening appliances, but in reality our orthodontist in Edgware can help with a lot more than just the generic straightening of teeth. Sometimes unevenly positioned teeth can cause additional dental problems later in life if they are not treated, so if you are worried about the positions of your teeth then we recommend that you attend a consultation appointment with one of our practitioners to find out more about how we can straighten your smile. They will be able to explain how your teeth need to move to achieve a straight, even appearance and recommend which appliances will be most suited to your individual situation.

No more misalignment or overcrowded mouths

Our orthodontist in Edgware is capable of assisting you with a whole range of problems that surround orthodontics, such as jaw misalignment and overcrowding. Jaw misalignment is where your top and/or bottom sets of teeth are not aligned correctly. This can cause an overbite or an underbite to develop, both of which can lead to complications later in life if they are not moved into their correct positions. Usually if someone is having jaw misalignment treated they will need to wear more than one type of appliance to completely straighten their teeth. One will be worn to align the jaw, and once this is in its correct position you will have another appliance to wear to then move your teeth into straighter positions, closing any gaps you have between your teeth and moving teeth apart where they overlap.

Sometimes people will suffer from overcrowding, which is where your mouth is too small for all of your teeth. They will be overlapping, and there may not be room for your teeth to move into straighter positions because of the lack of space in your mouth. If this happens to you then it is likely that our dental practitioners will remove one or more of your teeth before you undergo any straightening treatment, to ensure that your teeth have enough room to move.

Aftercare that lasts a lifetime

Regardless of what type of treatment you have received from our orthodontist in Edgware it is important that you take your aftercare seriously if you wish to keep your new and improved smile. When your treatment has ended we will supply you with a retainer to wear. This retainer will be custom made for your teeth and should be comfortable to wear. Depending on your individual circumstances you may need to wear your retainer for months or even years after your treatment has ended. Usually you will be expected to wear your retainer constantly for seven days after your treatment and after this you will be able to wear it solely at night.
